An unusually early prototype
Lot 1890
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Early 3rd to mid 4th centuries. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 2.82 g, 7 h), Taman Peninsula. Stage 1, imitating Trajan (98-117). SARNNSSNN SNNRRΛΛ Laureate head of Trajan to right. Rev. [.]VITGGKSARR - [..]SAVBIPHΛM Genius standing front, head to left, holding patera in his right hand and grain ears in his left. Sergeev -, cf. 280 ff. For prototype, cf. RIC 349 and Woytek 552. An unusual and interesting piece. Good fine.

This is an unusual imitation in two ways: first, it is very rare to find such early emperors as Trajan on Taman Peninsula imitations, and secondly, the imitative reverse legend is split in two parts, of which the one on the left is read outwardly, whereas the one on the right is turned inwards
